As we are all aware, EKSOM tariffs have increased by a total of 15,06% this year. This means that 2021’s increase will be the highest of the past decade and is also seven times more than the 2.20% increase in 2018. This does not give us a warm fuzzy feeling inside when we try forecast the future electricity increases the next decade will bring.
How can we hack the hike that ESKOM has in store for us? Is there anything we as electricity users can do to try negate the effects of the country’s ever-rising tariffs?
YES! For starters find out how many kilowatt units you are using per month and how much it is costing you. For example, with R500 I am currently only getting 191 KwH – This means I am paying about R2.61 per unit. which only lasts for 7 days. I therefore must be using an average of 764KwH per month.
It can be helpful to know how much it costs to run the various appliances in your household. This way you will know which appliances need to get used less in order to lower your monthly bill. Convert the number of watts into kW to work this out per appliance. This is usually on the label at the back of a machine. The major contributors are usually geysers, stoves, washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashing machines, kettles & microwaves.
As an Electrical Wholesaler and Renewable sources power provider we can offer the following suggestions:
- SAVE WITH SOLAR : Converting your geyser to solar can save you up to 40% of your current electrical bill. Sure, the initial costs may seem pricey but a solar geyser, for example will pay for itself in 3-5 years – and provide you with FREE hot water to come for many more years. .
- Turn up the Heatpump – have you considered getting a heatpump? Heat pumps use a small amount of electricity to produce up to 4 times the heat enerergy, perfect for hot water heating.
- Use LED lights – LED lights lasts almost 4 times longer than a normal globe – make the swap at home and notice the difference on the bill!
